25 Jun 1983 India lifted Cricket World Cup for the first time defeating West Indies in the final by 43 runs.
It was on Jun 25, 1983, when India lifted their first ever cricket World Cup title, defeating West Indies by 43 runs at the Mecca of Cricket Lords. No team in the world expected it from India but India came out of the blue in 1983 Prudential Cup.
The era was of Australia, England and off course West Indies. West Indies was heading towards its back to back 3rd title of World Cup. When West Indies came down for chasing 183 runs in 60 overs, nobody had thought West Indies won’t be able to chase down such a low score.
West Indies was equipped with batsman like Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes, Viv Richards, Clive Lloyd and Larry Gomes. But with the tight bowling of Indian side did not let them chase the given target and sent them back only at 140 runs defeating WI by 43 runs. It was Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath,both took three wickets and stopped West Indies’s third title of World Cup. It could have been the third consecutive title of West Indies under the captaincy of Clive Lloyd.

Before India lifted the cricket World Cup, Skipper Kapil Dev already was in the news after hitting 175 against Zimbabwe. After defeating England in semis India’s confident was high specially Mohinder Amarnath who was awarded man of the match in the semis against England after scoring 46 runs while chasing down the score of 213 and also took 2 wickets. Later on he was also awarded man of the match in the D day of 1983 prudential World Cup. India could lift the Cricket World Cup due to all round performance of Mohinder Amarnath.
